Research Area 1 befasst sich mit der Interaktion von Schwarmrobotern mit der Umwelt und untereinander. Insbesondere wird sich hierbei auf die Fähigkeit des Schwarms zur „Raumdeutung“ fokussiert, wobei Kommunikationsprobleme frühzeitig antizipiert werden und durch proaktive Pfadplanung, sowie Bewegung im Raum, minimiert oder sogar gänzlich vermieden werden. Zudem soll den Schwarmteilnehmern die unterschiedlichen Stärken und Schwächen der verschiedenen Robotertypen bewusst sein und diese durch Kooperation zielführend genutzt und ausgeglichen werden.
