The basket
A year of what you buy
Say how much of each item you consume, and the page adds up the deaths and injuries attributed to making it — with its interval, the three items that carry most of it, and what the sum leaves out.
A year of consumption carries a small share of one attributed death, and the same number turned round is one death a year for every so many people who consume the same way. Both are floors, and neither includes using the products.
Nothing you enter leaves this device. The basket is kept in this browser, not on a server — there is no account — and a shared link carries it after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server.

No published figures to add up yet
The basket adds published figures per unit, and none is published yet. When they are, it will offer the finished products below that have a figure, and follow the rules every page here follows: each figure with its interval, two significant figures, production phase only.
The finished products whose bill of materials is sourced
- Chocolate bar
- Coffee, one cup
- Cotton T-shirt
- Croissant
- Electric car
- Jeans
- Laptop
- Petrol car
- Smartphone
What this leaves out
- Using the products. Driving the car, charging the phone, running the washing machine: none of it is here, and for a car it is very likely the larger half of its toll. Only making things is counted — the production phase.
- Harm the model cannot attribute. Each figure counts only harm it can trace to a registered raw material in the product’s bill of materials, so every figure — and this sum — is a floor.
- Everything not listed. Housing, energy, travel, services and most food are not in this basket at all. Of the finished products the model knows, these have no figure yet: Air travel, Bedsheet set, Beef, Beer, Bicycle, Bread, Bus travel, Chair, Chicken, Electric bicycle, Game console, Jacket, LED bulb, Leather shoes, Mattress, Milk, Motorcycle, Pasta, Refrigerator, Rice, Sugar, Table, Tablet, Television, Towel, Train travel, Trainers, Washing machine, Wine.
- Any comparison between people. There is no average to beat and no ranking. The page compares a way of consuming with itself, multiplied.
